The state based Retail Award Categories recognize the surf industry’s best retailer for that category in the eyes of Surf & Boardsports Industry Brand & Manufacturer Members. All SBIA Retail Members are AUTOMATICALLY entered into the State Surf Retailer of the Year of their respective state and, the finalists from these categories are AUTOMATICALLY entered into the Australian Retailer of the Year. The SBIA Industry Brand / Manufacturer Members cast one vote considering the voting criteria and carries 100% weighting. State Awards Framework
  • Retailers must operate solely within the state or territory nominated
  • Breakthrough Retailer of the Year – National Sales Managers of SBIA Brand / Manufacturer Members in conjunction with their Sales Representatives and Agents vote retailers that have most transformed or improved their business through better processes, systems or merchandising.
 Voting Criteria

SBIA Brand / Manufacturer Members vote 1st to 3rd per state for each category considering the following:

  • Customer service
  • Store presentation
  • Merchandising
  • Store Fitout
  • Marketing
  • Buying / inventory management
  • store performance
  • Brand representation
  • History with the Brand(s) you are voting on behalf of
  • Breakthrough Retailer of the Year – National Sales Managers of SBIA Brand / Manufacturer Members in conjunction with their Sales Representatives and Agents vote for the retailer that has most transformed or improved their business through better processes, systems or merchandising.

The SBIA Industry Brand / Manufacturer Members cast one vote considering the voting criteria and carries 100% weighting. National Awards Framework
  • Core Boardstore – Retailers must have a dedicated hardware, surf accessories, wetsuits area. The products in this area are used in the sport of surfing, excluding softgoods and clothing. Entries must be a SPECIFIC STORE, the location must be specified. Retailers who own more than one core boardstore are limited to two entries only. National Sales Managers of SBIA Brand / Manufacturer Members in conjunction with their Sales Representatives and Agents will nominate eligible retailers into the Core Boardstore of the Year category based upon the aforementioned criteria. Finalists will be contacted to send through photos of their store. The winner will have these phtos displayed on the awards night presentation.
  • Australian Retailer of the Year – All finalists from the State Surf Retailer OTY will be AUTOMATICALLY entered into the Australian Retailer of the Year Award.

*Shop Fit Out of the Year – Judged Category Framework
  • The Shop Fit Out category is open to all Australian Surf Retailers who have opened a new store or completed a refurbishment completed in the previous calendar year. Entrants are to complete and submit the Australian Surf Industry Awards Shop Fit Out OTY Entry Pro Forma, supplied by SBIA. This submission form is available from the forms page. Maximum of one entry per Member.
  • The submission is to detail the store’s design elements, space planning, ambience, innovation, merchandising and value proposition displayed in their fitout.
    Areas that need to be addressed when completing the submission:
If your shop fit out was a refurbishment;
  • Describe the need for the upgrade and highlight the areas of deficiency in the original concept. Define how the space was planned and how the deficiencies were addressed through design and the visual overhaul.
Other items;
  • Detail the design elements, highlighting the unique elements that have been included in the approach and how this has impacted on the customer experience
  • Describe the ambience and atmosphere which were sought for your shop fit out and how this was planned for and accomplished
  • Overview the extent of the store upgrade and what was involved in the project
  • Outline how the upgrade has provided a new standard of excellence in the business and how this is likely to be replicated to build the brand
  • Does the development/re-development not only look good, but is it functional
  • Before and after photographs and/or videos of the store upgrade, demonstrating transformation, are critical to support the submission. These must be in a valid format of .pdf, .jpeg, .mp4 also accepted are links to vimeo / youtube and or other photo / video hosting websites. If using a web host, Retailers are to ensure the videos have embedding abilities
 Judging Criteria
  • Judging is based on all the information the submissions detail as well as any supporting collateral. Judging carries 100% weighting. For more information about judging please refer to the Judging Information.
  • The judging will consider the applicant’s creative approach to the criteria and its presentation within the judging process
