Summer and boardshorts go hand in hand and over the next few months, boardshorts will be one of the most important categories for every surf retailer, contributing around 15% of turnover.
Getting the basics right will help you maximise your sales and the most important of the basics is presenting the boardshorts well. It’s been a long time since prints and colours were the only things that distinguished different shorts.
These days all brands carry a variety of styles from premium performance shorts down to the elastic waisted basic short. There are different leg lengths, lightweight stretch fabrics, cross over walk shorts etc.
Getting the merchandising right is crucial to presenting each boardshort segment at its best. Billabong is a surf company that was founded on the this category, Gordon and Rena Merchant famously cutting the first pair in their house in Burleigh Heads in 1973, and it’s boardshort matrix is one that can be used as a guide for all stores.
